The throne of Ireland was before and at this time of Toirrdealbach death mainly accepted to be held by the great battle force of Muireachtach O Neill of the Cenel Eogain, who is styled in the records as the 49th hi king of Ireland.
This king as most of his predisessors conducted war against his neighbors particulary Munster and Meath and tried to control these by divisive measures and force.
Never in this era of Irish history was a king found who could command law and order between the princes and chiefs who did just about as they pleased.
They responded to thir leaders as clients because they had given there ruler hostages and alliances which they frequently changed by force.
The common people had no protection at all from the hi kings or for that matter thier own fine and lords who demaned of them tribute and military service at his will.
Women ,nobles and pleabians alike, were ignored as chattels from father to husband and then sometimes several of those.
Their children were considered only as the hiers of the fathers sons.
Daughters hardly being mentioned as existing except for the few who gained church notaritey or were abducted and came to the attention of stardom.
Their stories and thoughts are generally lost to history which is in itself tragic as most civilizations are created by the women in the home.
In Ireland the battle tradition outweighed all other factors including the Church who oftimes were targets of the Lords for the acquisition of property and food stuffs .
These Lords as well gave the Church much of their wealth and lands and defended their doctrine agaisnt each other.
The Country was torn apart time and time again and therefore no progress or general civilizing effects were left but Irleands mythology and mists.
Toirrdealbachs 11 sons went on to create a fractious province in Connact for another 500 years and become known as the Connors of Conaught.
